Ubuntu Naming Conventions
- Release Cycle: Ubuntu releases two major versions every year, one in April and one in October. Each version has a specific codename.
- Alphabetical Order: Codenames follow the order of the English alphabet. For example, a version starting with "B" was "Breezy Badger" (2005), followed by "C" for "Dapper Drake" (2006).
- Animal or Mythical Creature: Each codename consists of an adjective and the name of an animal or mythical creature. For example, "Warty Warthog" (2006), "Feisty Fawn" (2007).
- Lifecycle: Each Ubuntu version has a lifecycle, typically with 9 months of regular support. Long Term Support (LTS) versions provide 5 years of security and maintenance updates.
- LTS Versions: The April release every two years is a Long Term Support (LTS) version. These versions are more stable and suitable for enterprise use. Examples include "Lucid Lynx" (2010) and "Trusty Tahr" (2014).
- End of Sequence: When the codenames reach the letter "Z", a new sequence begins.
